Shalom Ranch Life Gap Year
We offer an exciting gap year program for young people 18 years and older wanting to immerse themselves in Ranch Life and learn all the skills involved in running a horseback cattle operation.
Join us for a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10 months. Specifically aimed at youngsters with a taste for adventure and a love of the cowboy way of life, our gap year program offers opportunities to learn a wide range of skills including horsemanship, stockmanship and herd health, the art of roping, doctoring of cattle, branding, dehorning, dipping, dosing and ear-tagging. Not to mention some pretty incredible experiences such as horseback cattle drives, working alongside us with our foals and young colts and many hours riding through breathtakingly beautiful countryside.
Besides ranching skills, gap year candidates can also expect to learn a lot about themselves in the process. Our program is founded on solid principles such as hard work, honesty, self-discipline, reliability and consistency. We have found that the real-life challenges that ranching presents are a very good classroom for developing true character.
We are passionate about ranching and have been for many years. We would love to have the opportunity to pass on our knowledge to young people wanting to further their skills in these areas.
But enough from us…. Why not hear for yourselves from this year’s Gap Year candidates?

The experience at Shalom Ranch Life has reignited my passion for horse riding and for being with horses. This was an absolute boost in my confidence – a feeling that will not quicky fade away. The techniques I have learned will aid me in my future farming activities and it has been life-changing being here. I have the utmost respect for the Buchan family and I have truly been blessed to be part of their daily lives.

I had no idea what to expect on the Shalom ranch experience. However I've been blown away by what I have been exposed to, from roping to cutting cattle and spending long hours in the saddle. The scenery and environment are of the most beautiful I've experienced. I have been challenged beyond what I thought I could do.
The Buchan family are amazing and have a special place in my heart. They have created a horse riding experience that is a dream come true and something I would do again and again.

This was one of the most extraordinary times of my life. It wasn’t just a style of farming that I learned, but a way of life, taught with patient guidance and thoughtful correction. We were encouraged to grow, not only in our practical skills, but in areas such as problem-solving, perseverance and teamwork. This experience is truly what you make of it. With hard work and dedication, it will reward you with a transformative, life- changing journey.

My time spent at Shalom Ranch Life has truly been an amazing time. It has made me build confidence in myself and enjoy the small things in life. The memories have given me stories to tell for years to come. I came to the gap year doubting my ability in horses and cattle and being unskilled in the ways of pretty much everything to do with the real world. I have been told by everyone around me that the person I was at the beginning of the year, and the person I am now, are two different people. I cannot express exactly how great the gap year has been for me, only that it is life changing, and one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I spent five weeks at Shalom Ranch, and it’s honestly hard to put into words how special that time was for me. If I’d had the time to stay longer, I absolutely would’ve.
From day one, the Buchan family made me feel completely welcome. They’re some of the kindest, most patient people I’ve ever met. You can go to them with any question, whether it’s about horses, cattle, or even just life, and they’ll take the time to teach you, guide you, and make sure you understand.
Every day we were out in nature, moved herds, counted cattle, and really learned how to read the animals. It was so satisfying to take something Uncle Fergus had taught us and then actually use it, and see it work. You end each day feeling tired in the best way, like you really did something.
I’ll always be grateful to the Buchans for the way they shared their life, their home, and their knowledge with us — and I’m already looking forward to the day I get to visit again.
